Some Whoop! Whoops! and a Major Disappointment!

This post is supposed to be all Whoop! Whoops!, but, I have one major disappointment included.

I made a baby quilt for a friend.  The baby shower is one month away.  I'll have to make a whole new baby quilt now. :(

This is the quilt, before the binding, and before washing.  Yes, I'd washed all the fabrics on the front of the quilt, but, I didn't wash the Minkee backing fabric.  I've never had a problem with Minkee before.

This red Minkee bled all over the baby quilt.

Check out the background fabric I used, next to the washed baby quilt.
background fabric is now pink, not off white
Almost all of the color fabrics on the front of the baby quilt were what was left over from my son's wedding quilt.  I'd washed and treated each color with Retayne before I started making his quilt.  Now I have to go buy more fabric, since I don't have most of the colors needed anymore.  For once, this was NOT a fabric purchase I wanted to make.

I do have a few Whoop! Whoops! that I've been working on.  Not much sewing going on this past week, but, I have lots ready for stitching now.

I made 8 of each of these RV's.  Four of each will become pot holders, and the other 4 of each will become placemats.  These are for hubby's aunt and uncle, who live in an RV full time, and for my brother and sister-in-law, who own an RV.

I'll stitch these thru the batting and backing, and, then the quilting will be done.  I just have to cut out the placemat fronts.  The placemats will be a yellow with white geometric print.

I'm also working on a secret project.  The fusible isn't sticking very well on this one for some reason (same fusible as in the RV's).  I'll stitch across everything with a mono-filament thread.  I've not use mono-filament thread in several years.

Hubby is a back packer, hiker and camper.  He can hang this in his cubicle at work.  I hope I don't mess it up, trying to stitch over all the pieces.  Some of the pieces are tiny!  I was using tweezers to hold them in place.

I'm off to pick up another sewing machine.  When people know that you collect old machines, they keep offering them to you.  The lady said that this machine needs some work.  We'll see.  If it works, I will give it to a friends sister, whose machine just broke.  A win-win for everyone.

  1. So sorry! It is still a beautiful quilt.

  2. Try rewashing it with a couple of color catchers - it may pull that out.

  3. It's hard to tell in the photos, but if you didn't see the original background fabric, would you know the red bled on the quilt? It is a lovely quilt. Your other projects are great! What a fun quilt for your husband.

  6. Follow Vicki Welsh's directions http://vickiwelsh.typepad.com/field_trips_in_fiber/save-my-bleeding-quilt/.
I know it works for bleeding fabrics, not sure about Minkee. I know several people that have saved quilts because of Vicki's research. She sells hand dyed fabric.

  7. Heartbreaking! I hope you can get it out--or just wash the whole thing again with Retayne to fix the pink.

  8. Oh no, I love that quilt. Maybe some of the tips here will help and I agree that if you didn't know does it look bad? I would remake the quilt, but maybe you can donate this one if the pink isn't awful.

  9. My advice is the same as Sharon's. Those color catchers can fix a lot in a couple of washings.

  10. Oh I hope maybe it can be fixed I agree with Sharon, I wouldn't have thought Minkee would bleed either. Love the campers though!

  11. I'm so sorry, but I still like the quilt. At least it looks great in the picture. I agree that it would be a good donation quilt if the bleeding is fairly regular and doesn't happen again. I guess you wouldn't want it to bleed in someone's wash. (Maybe wash it again with color catchers?) I think the campers are adorable, and I'm eager to see the hiking mini with the stitching.

  13. I would try rewashing with a couple colour catchers and see if that removes the excess dye. What a bummer :(
Can't wait to hear about the new/old machine!

  14. Oh wow Cheryl!!! That's terrible!!!! I wouldn't have thought Minkee would do that either. Good to know, although I'm sorry you had to find out like this.

  16. I wouldn't have thought that minkee would bleed either. Very discouraging. I love the campers, however. They are very cute and I'm sure the recipients will love them. The hiking quilt is nice too, can't wait to see it finished!

  17. Oh Major bummer! On the other hand - it sort of looks like hand dyed fabrics now? ( Does that make you feel better?)

  20. Sorry about your leaky Minki. The quilt would still work for a little girl. Usually those blankies get dragged through the world anyway.
Love your cute little campers and the hiker is right on. He will love it.
    Hugs

  21. That is too bad about all your troubles with the fabric bleeding and all. Soooo, the piece for hubby is it for Christmas/birthday? Just wondering if you have given it already and how he liked it. It's so cute. Perfect for an office or den.
