Treadle to the Rescue!

It's frigidly cold here in 'Chiberia'.  Add 9+ inches of snow before the temperatures started dropping on Sunday, and, it makes for one, very unhappy dog.  Our oldest dog, Padfoot, has been having problems with her feet in all this cold and snow.  In the last few days, it's gotten so bad, that she cried while we tried to clean the snow out between her paws, and, hubby has had to go outside and rescue her from the backyard.  Something had to be done, quick.

this is what it has looked like out my patio door (before the wind blew all the snow off this tree)

I pulled out some scraps of fleece that someone had given me, added some velcro cord straps I found at the thrift store last week, and, opened up my 'Victor' treadle (Victor has 'backtack' abilities, which was needed to secure the velcro, and ends of seams).  I checked out a few patterns online that hubby found, but, wound up doing my 'own thing' with the pattern.  After some trial and error, we have a set of booties for Padfoot.

Padfoot didn't like us putting the booties on her (she hates having her feet touched), but, she did pretty well.

Well, the booties WORKED!  Not only did they stay on, but, Padfoot could walk in them.  She was a happy dog!

  1. I need to make some for my cats, their paws are so cold, but they would get pretty gross in the litter box - LOL

  2. When I saw the title I figured your electric was off - it's possible in your neck of the woods. Glad Padfoot has booties, and they are washable and dryable and everything. You are a sweet Mommy.

  6. Aww....you are such good pet owners. Maybe others will do the same. But of course, all quilters are good pet owners.

  8. I hope Nikko never needs booties because it would take hog-tying her to get access to her feet! I think they sell stuff like that in pet shops here, but they are for little breeds and more of a fashion statement. Making something really needed is great. (And your weather is making our news still)!

  12. Wonderful booties! I was starting to plot the same idea out for my pup as well. She was also having troubles walking in this cold. Never thought I would be cheering when the thermometer hit zero degrees!

  14. We had a puppy chihuahua visiting us over the those cold days. I tried to make booties, but couldn't figure it out. Her piddles were so small, I told her mom not to worry about it. I'd rather have a few small mess than a frozen pup. She is off to warmer climes now, in Alabama. I miss her....
