Elephant Parade is Finished!

My large quilt guild, Pride of the Prairie, issued a challenge for the upcoming quilt show.  It is a paint chip challenge.  I posted all the info about the challenge on this post. The challenge was issued at the January 2017 meeting.  I got started right away.  This is only the 2nd time I've done one of the challenges for the quilt show.  Most of the entries are 'art' quilts, and that is way out of my realm of comfort.  I'm pretty traditional, not artsy.

I figured that just using 3 colors from paint chips was something that I might be able to do.  Off to Home Depot I went, and collected tons of paint chips with colors that started with either a C, H, or E (the first three letters of my first name).

I narrowed the chips down to just 3, and got started.  Once I'd seen the name 'Elephant Gray', I knew what I wanted to do (no, I didn't use that paint chip, since I couldn't find a gray fabric that matched the paint chip).  More info on my next moves are on this post and this post (mainly about the tail).

After those posts, I put the elephant aside, since I had several things that had 'due dates' long before the elephant challenge quilt.  Then, I found out that I would be a first time Grandma, and, of course the elephant was put aside for the Peter Pan quilt. The Peter Pan quilt took me from August thru December to complete.  Poor elephant, no time to work on it.

Last week, I finally pulled the elephant quilt back out, and got started on finishing it.  In the last 24 hours, I've attached the tail and stitched button leaves to the tree.

A friend thought I should add embroidery to the little elephants for mouths and eyes.  After playing around with a drawing, to see how the mouth should go, and where the eye should go, I decided to add ears to the little elephants instead.

The ears look much better in person, than in my bad photos.

Here is the finished elephant quilt.
Elephant Parade, finished

I have decided that this quilt is DONE!  I really like this elephant quilt.  I've done sew many things that I'd not tried before.

The challenge says that the quilt can't be smaller than 24" or larger than 45".  My elephant measures 31.25" long and 43.75" wide.

We also have to use at least one handwork method on the quilt (binding doesn't count), and I hand appliqued both little elephants, hand stitched on their ears, hand stitched the buttons on the tree, and braided the tail and attached that, too.

If you are in the Chicago area, I invite you to come see my quilt(s) and vintage machines at the show.

Celebrate International Craft Month & Giveaway

March is International Craft Month!  What a great excuse to craft and be creative everyday!

I've been being crafty on this project for a while now (I was slow on working on it).  My large quilt guild is having it's bi-annual quilt show March 12-13, 2016.  If you are near the Chicago area, please come check us out.  Pride of the Prairie Quilt Guild.  I'll be showing off several of my vintage sewing machines in the vendors area, so, come say 'Hi'.

Well, the guild has a challenge for each quilt show.  I decided to participate in the challenge this year.  We had to draw a quilt block out of a bag, then, figure out how to use that quilt block (tiny, to full sized) somewhere in our challenge quilt.  The maximum size for the challenge quilt is 20" square.

The block I drew was named 'Free Trade'.  All the blocks came from Patchwork Square.

I liked the name 'Free Trade', since quilters and crafters so often 'freely trade' their ideas to other quilters and crafters.  I decided to just make the block larger, and use my sewing themed fabrics to make the quilt.  This is the finished mini quilt.  It measures 19" square.

Since the faux selvage fabric is directional, I had to make extra Half Square Triangles, and fussy cut the squares.  That meant that I had extra HST's left over.  I decided to play around with them, and came up with a coaster and a mug rug.

I have coasters all over my sewing room, and I love to have little mug rugs sitting next to my machine, so that notions don't slide around.  I made these this weekend, and I'm already using them.

For those of you who don't know me, I do most of my sewing on vintage, straight stitch sewing machines.  My favorite machine is my 1959 Singer Spartan (192K) that I converted to a hand crank.  These projects were stitched on this machine.

More projects, etc.

I just keep stitching, and cutting.  I don't like cutting, but, I went ahead and cut out 2 more Red, White and True quiltsHere is the one I already started, for the quilt along...
1st Red, White and True quilt
first step for the Red, White and True quilt along
I need something to work on at the Quilts of Valor sew-in on Tuesday, but, I don't want to cut out the borders for one top (all it needs is the borders) (Oops! no pictures of the top, sorry), and I don't want to work on the other quilt top that I've started (I'll get back to it).

Well, now I have 2 more Red, White and True tops to start stitching on Tuesday.
2 new Red, White and True quilts
All the strips are cut out, but, I still need to finish cutting the 4.5" & 5.25" squares.  Since I don't need them yet, I figured I could finish those after I get these strips all stitched.

At my guilds sew-in, a week ago, I didn't get to one project.  My other guild is making walker bags for the veteran's homes.  I had 2 cut out, so, I stitched them this afternoon.  Both are the same fabric.

I added pockets, and made them bigger

a pocket for a magazine, and pockets for bottles, etc.
I REALLY need to finish thread basting this.
twin sized Churn Dash

quilting lines marked
This one is half basted, but, all the quilting lines are marked.  I don't know how people can baste on the floor.  My knees just wouldn't take it.  I use my dining room table.

I have also gotten a bit more stitched on the Frog Churn Dash, but, I don't have any pictures of what I did.  I'm liking it better and better, as I stitch on it.

Back in April, I told you that we got a new dog, Ratchet.  I also told you that he has heartworm.  He's been going thru treatments for the heartworm.  It includes 3 injections, in his back.  They had to shave his back for the injections (and to be able to see if there is any inflammation, etc).  His first injection was the end of May.  They shaved one side of his back then.  The next 2 injections were earlier this week, one on each side of his back.  You can see the darker area, where he had his first injection.  We think it is darker due to sunlight (a dog with a tan).
Ratchet's shaved back

Ratchet
The hardest part is keeping Ratchet restricted for months in a row.  He either has to be crated, or, locked in one room, with one of us.  He can't come upstairs, or, even go for walks, other than to potty.  Activity can cause the dead or dying heartworms to act like a blood clot, and kill him.

The vet's office just loves Ratchet.  They spoil him rotten when he is there, and fawn all over him.  One of the vets came in on his day off, just to be there when Ratchet got his injection.

We are hoping that his next test (end of July) will be clear.  If it is, then, hopefully we will be able to start taking Ratchet for walks, and getting him back in shape.  Ratchet had been in pretty good shape, since he is a retired weight pulling champion.  We got him AFTER he retired.

Well, I guess it's time for me to go get more stitching done.  I think I'll work on some hand quilting.  I need to finish my guild challenge mini quilt.
