Wendy #1

I finally finished the first Wendy paper pieced pattern for the baby quilt.  It's been a stressful week, and I didn't get nearly as much stitching done as I expected to.

Hubby bailed out on his 106 mile hike, several days early.  It took all day, Sunday, to finally be able to contact him, and make sure they were both ok.  No stitching done till late that night.

Also, we have quite a lot of family in the Houston area, and, I've been trying to check on them, what with hurricane Harvey flooding the area.  Everyone is ok, but, we don't know about everyone's homes at this point, since some were out of town when it hit, and other's had to evacuate.

Well, here is Wendy #1, by Alida P.

Here is the piecing picture.  99 pieces of fabric in this 10 inch block.

I'm pleased with this block.   All the mistakes were mine alone.  I did make several mistakes, but, I caught them, and corrected them in time, thank goodness.  There are 2 mistakes that I still have to correct.  As I was pulling the paper from the back of one of the blocks, I accidentally grabbed a thread, and pulled a seam out.   Oops!  Then, I did it a 2nd time.  Ok, that was time to stop taking the paper off, and wait till I had my tweezers.  I'll have to hand stitch those parts back together, since it can't be done by machine.  Oh well.

Oh yes, I'm still piecing these blocks on Tinkerbell, my 1925 Singer 99 hand crank.

I did get 2 more pin cushions finished, while making these blocks.  I mailed out packages for 6 different exchanges yesterday, too.  Only 3 more exchanges to finish this year, thank goodness. One is almost done, but, I haven't even started the other 2 exchanges.  I'm also behind on Kevin's Mystery Quilt.  I haven't done Clue #2, and he's already released Clue #3.  And if I haven't commented on your blogs, sorry, I haven't read a blog post since last Thursday.

Hubby gets home sometime today, so, I don't know how much I'll get done, sewing wise.

  1. Cheryl, your Wendy block is a beauty! 99 pieces is a challenge for sure! Take one day at a time (sometimes more like a minute at a time) to keep your feet grounded. Prayers for your family and all who are in the path of destructive Harvey. I love your work!

  2. Your blocks are incredible. I can't imagine so many pieces in one block. The news from Houston is shocking and so sad. My husband's uncle in Rockport lost his house.

  5. The Wendy blocks are fantastic! Seems like I always pull at least one thread when I'm removing paper on paper piecing. Glad you finally caught up with your hubby. Now prayers for your Texas family - that is a huge mess.

  6. I have tried paper piecing a couple of times but the patterns weren't that complicated. I would think with all those seams it would be hard to hand quilt anyway. The blocks are great and that will be one fantastic quilt when finished.

I've been MIA from my blog and haven't done much blog reading all summer. Hoping to get back to it now.

  8. I worried that you had family in Houston. It is so hard to watch the news, but you hate to not watch! Seeing the pictures of freeways that look like rivers is heart breaking. I have been to Houston many times and some of my favorite shops are in the effected area. I am glad all your family are OK but so sorry about the homes .

  9. Is Hubby O.K., I hope it wasn't a big problem that made him bail. Wendy looks great and again I'm glad it's you and not me, I'm not a fan of paper piecing but this is a labor of love. We have family in Houston too and I'm happy to say they and their house are safe.

  10. So sorry about your family members in the Houston area. As long as everyone is safe that is the main thing. But I do understand the devestation of losing your belongings also. Glad your hikers are OK even if they had to stop early on. Love your block, nice work!

  13. Your block looks perfect to me. What a challenge with 99 pieces. This will be a one-of-a-kind quilt and very special to the recipient. Hope your hubby is ok and it was not real serious to make them stop their hike. Glad your family in Houston is accounted for and hope they did not loose everything like I have seen on the news. The scenes have been so heart wrenching watching them being evacuated.
We have relatives there but haven't heard their plight yet. I hope no news is good news, but it's given they received more water than they were anticipating.
