Sapphire Stars Mystery Quilt

Kevin the Quilter is hosting a mystery quilt along.  This is his first online mystery quilt to host.  Here is the link to the fabric requirements, and, here is the link to Clue #1.  It's not too late to join in.  I cut and pasted Kevin's info, and have it in a notebook, with my fabrics.

Of course, I always have to do things a bit different than everyone else.  Yes, I cut out scraps, but, I have way more yardage than scraps, and, as far as I'm concerned, a Fat Quarter counts as scraps, too.  I did find some great fabrics in my small scrap cabinet.  The first clue uses Navy blue, Royal blue, and light blue.  These are the fabrics I settled on.

Since my quilts will probably go to Quilts of Valor, I decided to cut out 2 sets of Clue #1.  It doesn't take much longer to cut and stitch two sets, than it takes to cut and stitch one set.
2 scrappy sets cut out
After I cut out the scrappy sets, I decided to see what the quilt would look like if it was NOT scrappy.  I grabbed 3 of the different blues, and cut them out.  I won't use those blues in the scrappy quilts.

I stitched all my pieces, making sure that I ironed half of each set towards the middle (read Kevin's directions) and half towards the edges on each set.

Here are the NON-scrappy blocks.

And here are my scrappy sets.

2 half sets, ironed towards the middle

I didn't finger press the first, Non-scrappy set, and it messed with the bias more.  I followed Kevin's directions to finger press before ironing, and the scrappy sets ironed much easier.

I'm ready for the next Clue.  This didn't take long, so, JOIN IN!

  1. Those shades of blue that you picked out are very pretty and make up nicely into blocks. I'm anxious to see what you do with clue #2.
