Another one bites the dust

On Monday I showed the May Be Attitudes block finished.  Well, I finished the April block on Wednesday night.
April's Be Attitude block

That is my quickest finish for any of these blocks.  I'm already working on the March block now (yes, I'm working backwards on this stitchery).

My fabric stash is a mess.  I've had fabrics stored in the basement for ages, in plastic tubs.  There isn't any method in the storage, just what fits in a tub goes in the tub.  That doesn't make it easy to find anything.  I've also run out of space in my sewing room, on the shelves, to put more fabrics.  I like to fold my fabrics around Comic Book backings.  They fit better in my bookshelves that way, and also fit nicely in the plastic tubs.  Here is a link to what the folded fabrics look like in my sewing room along with the Comic Book backings. I can't believe my sewing room & closet looked so neat back then (it sure doesn't now).  I'm working on sorting the fabrics, as I fold them, into color groups.  It should be easier to find fabrics if I can just pull out a tub of 'yellows', or 'greens' when I am trying to 'shop my fabrics'.  I wonder how many UFO's I'll come across as I go thru these tubs?  I've already found one UFO.

  1. I sort my fabrics in stacking buckle-boxes by color. The solids get folded and into zip-lock bags by color too and those go in a big tea-chest. I keep stacking tins of some specialties like textured prints, leaf prints, gingham, plaids, etc.
I also have a big tub of kid-friendly prints sorted in alphabetical order. That being said, there are always casual piles here and there of stuff waiting to be sorted and put back.
I like that block. You are making fast progress.

  2. I've got my stash in cardboard (moving) boxes by general color... but there are 2 boxes of multi colors, a box of "I Spy" pieces and a box top of Harry Potter block making colors...fabrics that look magical to me. You know the kind.
    Good luck with your project.
    Hugs

  3. So Cute! Great job! My stash is also overflowing. And I too am finding ufo's that have been stuck in plastic containers.

  4. Mine is a mess too. I had a lot of it in the closet. Then I pulled it all out of the closet when I was looking for something. Now it is wall to wall tubs and bins on the sewing room floor. I won't get it cleaned up before the end of the year, though, so maybe a big clean up will be my resolution for 2019. If I remember, I'll post before and after pictures.

  5. Cheryl- Congrats on another one down! It looks terrific.

I feel you and empathize with how you are living with your stash. Mine too is out of control and I promise myself that 2019 will be the year I regain control. Yet with all those remarkable sales going on I purchased 90 yards of fabrics at incredible deals mind you but acquired them. Now I plan on tracking my usage and the decline it'll see as I share with the family and world.

    Merry Christmas!

  6. When I began, I stored my fabric in the empty Xerox boxes that printer paper comes in. Once purchased i'd wash it, iron, and fold so that when the box is standing on its end, the fabric would just nicely fit... I buy one yard cuts! As the box gets filled that way then when set on its bottom one can see all the fabric that is inside it. I liked those boxes because they come with lids. Now I buy the 25 gallon plastic bins with the tops that have 2 pieces hinged that fold into the middle. They hold more. I have bins specifically for batiks, one for solids, some for landscaping, Christmas, 1930's reprints, 5 bins for 1800's reprints (!), Poka-dots and stripes, backings, flimseys, etc.! Then I have large florals, and finally by color. (in other words, I have my own store to shop in!) and a couple more bins for the strings of fabric scraps.) If something is purchased for a specific project, it goes in something with the rest of it... small lidded boxes, lined with a clean white dish towel that the folded fabric is placed in, then the towel is folded over it to keep the acid from the box from harming the fabric. I have kitted up a number of these. Do I sew much? or do I just collect all this? excellent question!

    1. I try to avoid the paper boxes because of the acid in them. Clear plastic buckets are my choice. I do have projects sorted separately. I have 2 buckets of Christmas fabrics, and other are also sorted (like yours are). You are a no-reply blogger so I can't reply to you privately.

  7. I keep myself pretty controlled with the stash--I have to have everything where I can see it so it's all in one hutch. When it starts getting too full, I know I have to get some [scrap?] quilts made asap! Good time to go through it all as we near the end of the year! Might finish up what I have going and then do the same myself. TIme to plan for next year....not that I ever stick to the "plan" completely anyway!

  8. Your block turned out so cute. I tried the comic book wrapping way back because it looked so nice on shelves, but found out that I could not store as much in a cabinet or lawyers bookcase that way (on end like a book). So I'm back to folding it with a ruler and stacking it on top of each other on the shelf. I can store 3 times as much fabric that way. My stash is way out of control, but I'm happy to say, I have not had to buy any fabric for 4+ years. Still shopping my stash!
