Grrr!!!

When all else fails, read the directions!  Well, I should have re-read the directions before making more string blocks!

I made some string blocks for a block exchange back in February.  It was time to make more of the blocks so that I could finish these blocks.  The pattern is a freebie on Quilt in a Day.

Well, I read the pattern and cut out paper backings for the rest of the string blocks back in February.  I started stitching string blocks on Sunday, and by Tuesday night I'd made 24 string blocks.  The blocks are supposed to be 7.5" x 6.5".  Dummy me made them 6.5" x 7.5".  I just had it in my head that spools of thread are taller than they are wide.
the directions

Here are my blocks, next to the four I'd made back in February.

NOT ONE OF THE BLOCKS WILL WORK FOR THIS PATTERN!!!!!  Nope, I can't turn them, since the strings have to run sideways, not top to bottom.  GRRR!!!!!

I used up lots of the strings that I had in yellow, orange and teals.  I'm not sure I can get many blocks out of those colors now (Grrr!)
I really didn't want to cut into yardage to make these blocks.

I'm sure none of you have ever made such a stupid mistake before.

Now to go see about making more (correct) string blocks.

  1. Everyone makes a crazy mistake (or two, three...) at some point, especially when busy, distracted etc. Sorry it happened! Maybe make some "lemonade out of those lemons" some other time? Hang in there!

  2. What size strings do you need. Colors? I might have some to share.

  3. I've done something similar - more than once. Take time to read the pattern? Not me. I often assume what's coming next!

  4. Since most of the blocks are done in one size, just make 4 more of those and revise the pattern for the new size spools. Then you will just have 4 blocks not being used right now and you won't need to worry about not having enough colors to finish. That's what I would do.

  5. oh dear we have all done that. yes go on make the new ones and make something else with these or could make these into spools and have 2 sizes in the project..

  6. Oh no! I hate when that happens. If these are for a block exchange, it looks like your only option is to begin again. 🙁 At my house, these would then go in the orphan bin to be used later. If you are just making the blocks for yourself, you might consider resizing the blocks so these will work. ~Jeanne

  7. Oh my goodness! Been there, done that!!! It's the beginning of a new project!!! You will now have enough spools to make your own quilt in a different size!!! I feel for you. Sending hugs!!!

  8. I think you could do some creative resizing - OR turn the spool on its side. I always try to look at mistakes as a creative springboard, not a failure.

  9. Any chance to alter the size over all? Other wise, you have to design another string project. We have all done this goof I am sure.

  10. Sorry, Cheryl! I've made similar mistakes.

  11. Maybe redraft the pattern to fit the new size of string block, and the have two different sized columns in the layout... some columns of the short wide spools, and some columns of the taller narrower spools. Maybe the tall narrow spools could have an orange rectangle bottom, and a little orange square in the middle of two neutral rectangles to become Aurifil spools, and the original blocks could be the quilt in a day pattern with brown tops and bottoms. It could be a combination of the old threads and the new threads!

  12. I make dumb mistakes every time I sew. I say, go make the pattern your own. Do some up and some down and call it your "the world is crazy right now" quilt. It's your artistic license to do it anyway you want. Put your stamp on it and acknowledge that we are all made from a different pattern!!

  13. I feel your pain. Sorry that happened. I haven't started my blocks yet. I'm glad to see what you've used for strings. I feel more confident to sew mine now.

  14. Trust me you are not alone in this debaucle!!! We've all made a similar mistake, if not in the sewing room, then in the kitchen, workshop or someplace else that requires imagination... and time!!!
